Charles Valton was born in Pau on jan.26th,1851. He has studied with both masters of XIXth century animal sculpture, BARYE and FREMIET, who both happened to be at some stage the manager of the botanical garden in Paris, where young Valton spent most of his time trying to catch the various positions and anatomic details of the usual guests at the "Menagerie".
From 1868 on, and until 1914, Valton regularly exhibits at the "Salon de Paris", with over 70 different animal models shown and several medals won. In 1883, he became professor of sculpture at the Germain Pilon art school, and is awarded the legion of honour in 1906 for his whole career.
Valton is found of felines in particular, and he often adds other materials than bronze to create a support, such as white marble to evoke snow, or grey granite stone used as a rock.
Charles Valton knew perfectly how to catch the feline grace and the powerful muscles of this resting lioness, raising up her head and ears with curiosity, but still keeping quiet and peaceful.
